The Flumes of Paradise
by Sarah Peterson Young
Every once in a while I will have an email forwarded to me that stirs emotions that span my experience in Butte County. Not long after I arrived in Chico to attend Butte College, brushing up a few undergrad requirements before sliding into Chico State, I was introduced to The Flumes. As a newcomer to the region, I was excited to find out that there was such pristine aquatic access just a quick drive up the hill. Friends from my hometown that had attended Chico State couldn’t speak more highly about The Flumes- they considered it as crucial to the Chico State experience as a drinking an ice-cold Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.
Upon my first visit to The Flumes, I was not disappointed! As Sarah Peterson Young mentions in her writing entitled “The Flumes”, I was now privy to the “beauty and power of the West Branch of the Feather River.”
At OEFA, we agree that natural resources in the Butte County area are the local children’s birthright and they should be treated and protected as such. What Sarah doesn’t mention is HOW to ensure these PG&E lands are rebuilt, protected, and made available to the public.
Here is a quick and easy way to voice your support for rebuilding The Flumes:
Write a letter addressed to Paradise Recreation and Parks District encouraging their procurement of the Flumes.
Write a letter addressed to PG&E expressing your interest in the transfer of the land
Rock the Vote! Vote for candidates that clearly support the preservation of Natural Resources.
Join OEFA in order to advocate for the rebuilding of The Flumes (this one is my favorite).
With the likes of awesome advocates, like Sarah, we will ensure our natural resources are preserved for everyone on The Ridge to enjoy.
